Amazonite is a variety of potassium feldspar and belongs to the mineral class of microclines. It is a turquoise mineral that forms from deposits on the ground under very low temperatures. The colour is due to the amount of lead present in the mineral.

Amazonite was loved by the Egyptians for its beauty and exceptional healing powers. It was often incorporated into jewellery and important writings. In ancient times, Amazonite was known as ‘Amazon stone’ since it was discovered in the Amazon basin (Brazil). The ‘ite’ refers to the Latin ‘itus’ meaning ‘related to’. Amazonite can be cleaned in all ways, but you must be careful with water. Amazonite may only be held under cold or lukewarm running water (never hot!) for a short period of time and must be dabbed dry immediately afterwards. Amazonite should not come into contact with chlorine, so it is best not to wear it in swimming pools and hot tubs, and is also best to be careful with tap water, as here too the chlorine content is often too high.
